Chapters 19-24
Chapter 19
In this chapter Isabel and Ruth go to church with Mrs.Lockton and Lady Seymour. When they left, the Patriots started to fire at the British as they sailed into the harbor. The British didn’t come close enough to get hit. Ruth started to have one of her fits, but Isabel convinced Mrs.Lockton to bring Ruth back to house on the excuse that the sound of cannon startled Ruth. After they got home, Mrs. Lockton was spying on Isabel and Ruth as they were cleaning dirty rocks with the table cloth.
Chapter 20
In this chapter Congress signs the Declaration of Independence and the soldiers in New York break apart the statue of King George III for bullets. When Isabel came home, Mrs. Lockton had made gingerbread with sweet milk for both Ruth and Isabel, but Isabel felt sleepy after eating both.
Chapter 21
Chapter 21 starts off in Isabel's dream. In this dream, she is on a beach and is scared by eels, afraid they would bite her. When Isabel wakes up, she realized Ruth isn’t there. Becky let Isabel know the horrible truth that Madam Lockton has sold Ruth and Isabel can’t find her. Isabel went to looking for Mrs. Lockton. When she found her she confronted her and asked her what she thought by taking away her baby sister. Lockton told her if she does something she could have her hung. Then Mrs. Lockton took a painting off of the wall and threw it on Isabel's head. Isabel ran, to see Colonel Regan. As Isabel told him what happened and fought to stay, Colonel Regan said that he could not do anything about and Mrs. Lockton took her back.
Chapter 22
In this chapter Isabel woke up from being beaten on her way to the dungeons under the City Hall. There, she spent two days until her trial in which she was not allowed to talk. Isabel was sentenced to be branded with the letter "I" on her face to resemble Insolence because she attempted to murder her owner and run.
Chapter 23
In this chapter Isabel was dragged to the courtyard. A guard grabbed her and pulled her to the stone where she is to be branded. She felt the hot iron which was burning on her face. After being branded she passes and then dreams of her parents.
Chapter 24
In this chapter, Isabel woke up in Lady Seymour's house. Isabel gets told, that she was passed out for six days after she was branded. Lady Seymour took care of her, but she still has to return to Mrs. Lockton's as soon as she is better.
